The warmth of wood in the workplace

2 February 2026 · Materials

For a long time, professionalism was confused with coldness. Hard floors, crisp partitions, white light, unforgiving surfaces: the office had to look serious, even if that left no room for comfort. It took time to admit the obvious — warm materials are what make a place habitable.

Wood, a material that calms

Wood softens the scale of a floor plate, warms up light that is too harsh, absorbs part of the ambient noise. Above all, it lives: it takes on a patina, keeps the trace of time, gains presence where glass and metal merely age. Used with judgement, rather than stuck everywhere as an argument, it turns an open-plan floor into somewhere people simply feel good.

Comfort as a requirement

Combined with planting, it creates the pauses a workplace needs: softer, more intimate areas that contrast with the technical surfaces without ever disowning them. It is a balance, not a fashion.

Choosing a material already means thinking about the person who will spend eight hours a day beside it. It is not a bit of soul granted at the end of a project: it is an architectural decision, on a par with structure or light. Warmth, too, is something you design.
